Welcome to Athena Flute Tuition

My name is Abigail Cox and I am a flautist and teacher based in Gloucestershire. I offer private one-to-one tuition for beginners, intermediate level and advanced students as well as tuition for those who just want to learn for fun. All lessons are individually tailored to suit the student's unique learning style and take place in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

The inspiration for the name Athena Flute Tuition comes from Greek mythology. Athena is goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Interestingly, Athena is also credited with being the creator of the double flute.

In accordance with the legend, the goddess disliked how her cheeks looked whilst playing the instrument and so she threw it aside where it was picked up by Marsyas, who later challenged Apollo to a musical competition. Legend also tells us that she was known most specifically for her strategic skill in warfare and is often portrayed as companion of heroes and is the patron goddess of heroic endeavour.

As musicians, we should strive not only to learn our instrument and develop our technique, but also to master our ability to tell a story. A good story can fire our imagination and transform the way we use our instrument to convey that to our audience.
